    Itinerary

To join the Krakow Old Town Walking Tour you should make your way to the start point. Here you will meet your English-speaking guide. The 3-hour tour consists of a 2 ½ -hour walk tour and a 30-minute break for discussion.

Your tour first takes you through the Old Town with its glorious medieval buildings, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Until the 16th century this district was the center of Polish political, social and cultural life.

You’ll see the famous Main Market Square. Surrounded by elegant townhouses, palaces and churches, this is the largest medieval town square of any European city. At its center is the magnificent Renaissance Cloth Hall, which has been in business for 700 years and could be regarded as the world’s oldest shopping mall!

You’ll see the Town Hall Tower, Krakow’s leaning tower and a famous landmark. Your guide will also point out St. Mary’s, a twin-spired Gothic church with a poignant tradition. Every hour, a plaintive trumpet signal plays from the taller tower to commemorate a famous 13th century trumpeter who was shot while sounding the alarm before a Mongol attack.

Other important landmarks include Jagiellonian University. Established in 1364 by Casimir III the Great, this is the second oldest university in Central Europe and one of the oldest universities in the world.

You will pass Wawel Hill, topped by Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral and the seat of royal power up until the 17th century. The Castle was home to three dynasties of Poland’s monarchs, many of whom are buried in the Cathedral. The great Cathedral contains a quantity of superb religious art and boasts one of the world’s largest bells.

Your tour includes a walk in Planty Gardens, a leafy ring of some 30 public gardens established on the site of the medieval fortifications, and a half-hour break for discussion. Over coffee (or another beverage) (payable direct) you can discuss with your guide all the fascinating things you have seen and gain insights into the recent history of Poland.

The tour ends at Wawel Castle Hill.
