For your exciting Krakow Bike Tour you should make your way to the start point at 2 Grodzka Street. Here you will meet your English-speaking guide and collect your bike.
Your tour first takes you through the Old Town with its glorious medieval buildings, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Until the 16th century this district was the center of Polish political, social and cultural life.
You’ll see the famous Main Market Square. Surrounded by elegant townhouses, palaces and churches, this is the largest medieval town square of any European city. At its center is the magnificent Renaissance Cloth Hall, and next to it the Town Hall Tower, a famous landmark.
Your guide will point out St. Mary’s, a brick two-towered Gothic church with a poignant tradition. Every hour, a plaintive trumpet signal plays from the taller tower to commemorate a famous 13th century trumpeter who was shot while sounding the alarm before a Mongol attack.
You’ll also see Florian’s Gate, a medieval tower built as part of the city’s defenses against Turkish attack, and the Czartoryski Museum, housing a rich and eclectic collection of artifacts begun by Princess Izabella Czartoryska in 1796.
Your tour also takes you through the atmospheric Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz). See the Jewish cemetery, synagogues, and ghetto and hear the turbulent history of this fascinating area, the setting for Steven Spielberg’s film “Schindler’s List”. This film is based on the true story of German industrialist Oskar Schindler who is credited with saving the lives of more than 1200 Jews during the Holocaust. See the enamelware factory owned by Schindler, where he employed Jewish workers and protected them during the Nazi regime.
After visiting the Jewish quarter you will make your way past the Vistula river and Wawel Hill with its famous Dragon’s Den. The “Den” is a cave reputed to have once been home to a fearsome monster. You’ll also see the vast complex of Wawel Castle, a former royal residence originally built in Gothic style and added to over the years.
The tour ends back at the starting point.
